After adopting a pet from a shelter, will they take back the animal if it doesn't work out at home?

I have done research and know all I need to know about which animal to chose (cats to be precise) but I have one unanswered question. Do you think after adopting a pet from a shelter, they will take back the animal if it didn't work out at home?
